The story

Gueydan Duck Festival in Gueydan

The Gueydan Duck Festival celebrates the small Vermilion Parish town's identity as the Duck Capital of America, a nickname rooted in the surrounding marsh and rice-field hunting grounds. The Labor Day weekend event features a duck calling contest, a duck gumbo cook-off, a parade, carnival rides and Cajun music.

Gueydan was founded in the late nineteenth century by brothers Jean-Pierre and Francois Gueydan, who purchased tens of thousands of acres of what surveyors then dismissed as sea marsh unfit for cultivation, land that instead proved to be prime habitat for ducks, geese and other waterfowl drawn to the Mermentau River basin.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Gueydan's surrounding wetlands, described by early settlers as a hunter's paradise thick with ducks, geese and other game, gave the town its lasting identity as the Duck Capital of America, a title recognized in Louisiana's own catalog of city nicknames

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival's duck calling contest gives working hunters and guides from the surrounding marsh country a genuine competitive stage, tying the event directly to the hunting economy that still shapes the parish rather than treating waterfowl as a purely decorative theme
