East Maui Taro Festival in Hana

Held each spring at Hana Ball Park on Maui's remote eastern shore, the East Maui Taro Festival has run since 1993 and passed its 30th annual edition in 2026. The free, all-day event celebrates kalo, or taro, the Hawaiian staple crop, through poi pounding, hula, slack-key guitar music, agricultural exhibits, Hawaiian crafts, and food booths built around taro dishes.

In Hawaiian tradition, kalo is not simply a crop but a relative: the story of Haloa, recorded across generations of oral tradition, describes the first kalo plant as an elder sibling of the Hawaiian people, born of the same divine parents, whose role was to nourish and be cared for by those who came after.
