The story

Hays Oktoberfest in Hays

Hays Oktoberfest is an annual celebration of Volga German heritage held at Municipal Park in Hays, Kansas, timed to coincide with Fort Hays State University's homecoming weekend each October. Organized by the Volga German Centennial Association since 1974, it features traditional food, music, beer, and craft vendors.

Volga Germans were ethnic Germans who settled along Russia's Volga River in the eighteenth century at the invitation of Catherine the Great, maintaining German language, religion, and customs for generations while living under Russian rule, before large numbers emigrated to the United States in the late nineteenth century as Russian policies toward German settlers grew less favorable.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This is not a generic beer festival borrowing German branding

02

The mystery stays covered

it is organized specifically by the Volga German Centennial Association, a group founded in 1974 to preserve the distinct heritage of Volga Germans, ethnic Germans who first settled along Russia's Volga River before emigrating to Kansas in the nineteenth century, giving the festival a specific and unusual immigration history behind its German-themed food and music

03

The city starts moving

Scholarship funding raised through the festival further ties the celebration to concrete community benefit rather than pure entertainment

Place
