Howell Melon Festival in Howell
The Howell Melon Festival celebrates a cantaloupe hybrid that farmers claim only reaches full sweetness in this pocket of Michigan soil, now in its 66th year since Dr. Louis May organized the first edition in 1961. The Howell Melon Run kicks off Friday evening, melon ice cream draws its own dedicated line, and a vendor and artisan show fills downtown through the weekend.
Stand on Grand River Avenue on a Saturday morning in mid-August and you'll understand immediately: vendors line the street, and nearly everyone is holding something orange.
