The Louisiana Pirate Festival, formerly known as Contraband Days, is Lake Charles's official celebration of the legendary pirate Jean Lafitte, held over the first two weeks of May. First staged in 1957, it draws more than 200,000 visitors with a pirate-themed invasion, parades, a carnival midway, live music and lakefront events.

Lake Charles sits on the Calcasieu River and its namesake lake in southwest Louisiana, a waterway system long associated with the legend of Jean Lafitte, the early nineteenth-century privateer whose ships reportedly moved through the bayous and inlets of the Gulf Coast smuggling contraband goods past customs authorities.
