Each October, uptown Lexington, North Carolina closes its main streets for a one-day celebration of Lexington-style barbecue, the chopped pork shoulder and vinegar-and-ketchup dip that gave the city its self-declared title of Barbecue Capital of the World. Started in 1984, the festival now draws crowds far beyond its founding 30,000 to sample plates from area restaurants and hundreds of vendors.
