The story

Arkansas Apple Festival in Lincoln

The Arkansas Apple Festival has celebrated Lincoln, Arkansas' apple-growing heritage every first weekend of October since 1976. Founded by nine local residents the year before, it grew out of an earlier Apple Blossom Festival tradition in nearby Rogers from the 1920s, once home to the state's largest apple orchard.

Lincoln, Arkansas sits in Washington County apple country, a fact that once meant something very literal: the state's largest apple orchard operated just outside town.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival carries direct political and cultural history alongside its agricultural theme: Arkansas' largest apple orchard once operated just outside Lincoln, giving the town a genuine claim to the theme rather than an arbitrary branding choice, and its roots trace back to the Apple Blossom Festival held in Rogers from 1923 to 1927, whose parade of apple-themed floats from towns across Washington and Benton counties prefigured Lincoln's own event

02

The mystery stays covered

Governor Bill Clinton crowned the 1980 Apple Queen, Sandra Williams, and Governor Frank White proclaimed October 'Arkansas Apple Month' in 1981, giving the small-town festival two gubernatorial endorsements within five years

03

The city starts moving

The inaugural 1976 festival featured country singer David Allen Coe, partly funded through a 'womanless wedding' fundraiser with local businessmen playing the bridal party roles
