The story

Texas Blueberry Festival in Nacogdoches

The Texas Blueberry Festival is a free, family-friendly street festival held every second weekend of June in downtown Nacogdoches, Texas, celebrating the East Texas blueberry industry that took root in the region during the 1960s and 1970s. Founded in 1989 by local residents Leon and Patsy Hallman, it draws close to 20,000 visitors each year.

Its crop identity and East Texas setting make it a good regional food row.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

As the only state-sanctioned blueberry festival in Texas, the event ties directly to a real agricultural story: rabbiteye blueberry varieties brought from Georgia and Florida took hold in East Texas soil in the 1960s, and Nacogdoches farms enjoyed a commercial boom through the 1970s and 1980s before late freezes, drought, and outside competition thinned the industry

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival was created to keep that blueberry identity alive downtown even as commercial acreage shrank, folding a blueberry pie contest, a 5K run, a car show, and a pancake breakfast around a juried arts and crafts market

03

The city starts moving

Its free admission and setting in one of Texas's oldest towns keep it a genuinely local event rather than a ticketed commercial festival
