The story

Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival in Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival transforms Franklin Square, one of William Penn's five original city parks, into a glowing display of illuminated lantern art each spring. Produced by Historic Philadelphia in partnership with Tianyu Arts and Culture, the festival features dozens of larger-than-life lanterns built with traditional Chinese lantern-making methods and thousands of LED lights, alongside live performances, food, and artisan crafts.

Its large light sculptures and cultural programming make it a strong visual arts row.

02

The mystery stays covered

, the festival's parent producer, hand-build giant illuminated sculptures, including a three-story pagoda and a sprawling Chinese dragon, using silk, wire frames, and traditional techniques passed down through generations of Chinese lantern makers, then wire them with thousands of LED lights

03

The city starts moving

The event traces back to a nearly 2000-year-old Chinese custom of lighting lanterns on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month to close out Lunar New Year celebrations, though in Philadelphia the display runs in spring rather than winter because of the city's cold weather, letting visitors linger longer among the lanterns
