The story

Dungeness Crab and Seafood Festival in Port Angeles

Every October, on the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, downtown Port Angeles, Washington hosts CrabFest, a free three-day celebration of Dungeness crab and regional seafood that grew from a single cooking demonstration into one of the coast's best-known seafood festivals. Ferry passengers from Victoria, British Columbia join locals for crab dinners, cooking demonstrations, a vendor market and live music along the waterfront.

Port Angeles sits on the Strait of Juan de Fuca across from Dungeness Spit, the sandy hook for which Dungeness crab is named, and commercial crab and seafood harvesting has anchored the local economy for generations.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival is anchored in a genuinely local resource: Dungeness crab is named for the nearby Dungeness Spit, and Port Angeles fishing boats land much of what is served

02

The mystery stays covered

Roughly a third of attendees arrive via the Black Ball Ferry from Victoria, giving the event an unusual cross-border, cross-strait character among American food festivals

03

The city starts moving

Beyond the signature crab dinner, the program includes a free Coast Guard boat tour, a Search and Rescue demonstration, and a seafood cook-off judged live, activities that tie the celebration to the working waterfront and maritime safety culture of the Olympic Peninsula rather than treating seafood purely as a tourist commodity
