Portland Adult Soapbox Derby in Portland
Every August, homemade gravity-powered racers built by local teams career down a paved switchback on Mt. Tabor Park's old volcanic cone, watched by costumed crowds drinking beer in the summer sun. Founded in the late 1990s by two friends inspired by a similar race in San Francisco, the free, community-run Portland Adult Soapbox Derby has become one of the city's most beloved and gleefully low-stakes summer traditions.
The Portland Adult Soapbox Derby traces its origin to a single trip.
