The story

Poteet Strawberry Festival in Poteet

Poteet Strawberry Festival is a three-day April event in Poteet, roughly twenty miles south of San Antonio, founded in 1948 to celebrate the town's status as the Strawberry Capital of Texas. Approaching its eightieth annual edition, it features a King and Queen coronation, grower exhibits, and a carnival, honoring the Missionary strawberry crop first grown successfully there in the 1920s.

Its crop identity and scale make it one of Texas's strongest food-festival rows.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Poteet's identity as the Strawberry Capital of Texas traces to a specific historical figure, Gustav Aigner, an experienced strawberry farmer who relocated to Poteet in 1920 and successfully grew Missionary strawberries where other crops had struggled, and the town still marks that legacy with a strawberry-shaped water tower and a six-foot-tall, 1,600-pound World's Largest Strawberry roadside attraction

The city starts moving

Aigner, from the same family, serving as the first festival king, the event has run for nearly eight decades built entirely around supporting local strawberry growers, extending its programming beyond the festival weekend into harvest-season farm visits that let visitors meet the growers directly during the actual picking season
