Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition in Rockford

The Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition traces to a 1985 snowmobile trip when Rockford businessmen Dennis Johnson and Brian Hampton discovered competitive snow sculpture in Wisconsin, leading to Rockford's first official contest in 1987. Held annually the last weekend of January at Sinnissippi Park, the event pits adult and high-school teams against six-by-six-by-ten-foot and four-by-four-by-six-foot snow blocks.

A chance snowmobile trip through northern Wisconsin in 1985 gave two Rockford businessmen, Dennis Johnson and Brian Hampton, their first look at competitive snow sculpture, when they stumbled onto a winter carnival featuring work by Jim and Bev Neihaus of Eagle River.
