The story

Rush Springs Watermelon Festival in Rush Springs

Rush Springs, Oklahoma, the self-declared Watermelon Capital of the World, has held its Watermelon Festival every second Saturday of August since 1948, filling Jeff Davis Park with a free watermelon feed, seed-spitting contests, and a 5K and 10K Watermelon Run. Over 20,000 visitors gather each year for an arts and crafts fair with more than 100 vendors, carnival rides, live entertainment, a classic automotive show, and roughly 50,000 pounds of local melon.

Rush Springs sits in Grady County, Oklahoma, on land where the Wichita people established a village near local springs around 1850, decades before cattle drovers began watering their herds along the Chisholm Trail through the same area.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few small-town food festivals can claim a title as literal as Watermelon Capital of the World, and Rush Springs has held onto both the nickname and the crop that earned it since well before the festival itself began

02

The mystery stays covered

The town's sandy soil along Rush Creek proved especially suited to growing sweet watermelons, and the festival exists specifically to celebrate that agricultural identity rather than a borrowed or invented theme

03

The city starts moving

Now in its eighth decade, it draws a crowd many times the size of the town's own population, making it one of the more disproportionately large small-town festivals in Oklahoma relative to where it's held, and its free watermelon feed remains a direct, literal expression of local hospitality rather than a ticketed food-festival gimmick
