Saint Paul Winter Carnival is an annual January festival in Saint Paul, Minnesota, founded in 1886 after a New York reporter dismissed the city as unfit for winter habitation. Organized around a mock royal court of King Boreas and Vulcanus Rex, it fills ten days with an ice palace, torchlight parade, snow and ice sculpture carving, a jigsaw puzzle contest, hotdish competition, and community knighting ceremonies.
