The story

Sandpoint Winter Carnival in Sandpoint

Every February since 1973, downtown Sandpoint has kicked off deep winter with a ten-day Winter Carnival opening with a Parade of Lights and closing with the K9 Keg Pull, where dogs race down Cedar Street pulling kegs sized to their weight class. Live music, a Let It Glow parade at Schweitzer Mountain Resort, and dining deals around town fill out the schedule.

Sandpoint has marked the deepest, coldest stretch of North Idaho winter with a dedicated carnival since 1973, giving residents of this lake town a reason to celebrate rather than simply endure the season.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Sandpoint's Winter Carnival has run every February since 1973, opening each year with a Parade of Lights, an illuminated procession of floats and vehicles through downtown, followed by a block party

02

The mystery stays covered

A separate Let It Glow parade and fireworks display at Schweitzer Mountain Resort extends the celebration up the mountain, and the ten-day run includes a Dine Around Sandpoint program offering deals at local restaurants

03

The city starts moving

The carnival's signature closing event, the K9 Keg Pull, has dogs racing down Cedar Street pulling kegs scaled to their size, large dogs pulling full kegs, medium dogs pulling slim kegs, and small dogs pulling empty beer cans, with entry donations benefiting the Panhandle Animal Shelter
