The story

Zozobra in Santa Fe

Zozobra is the annual burning of a 50-foot marionette effigy known as Old Man Gloom, staged by the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe at Fort Marcy Park on the Friday before Labor Day weekend, traditionally kicking off Fiestas de Santa Fe. Created by artist Will Shuster in 1924 as a backyard party piece, the effigy is stuffed with paper slips recording attendees' worries from the past year, and its burning draws over 60,000 spectators in person plus hundreds of thousands watching online.
