The story

OysterFest in Shelton

Hosted by the Shelton Skookum Rotary Club on the first full weekend of October, OysterFest is Washington State's official seafood festival, held at Shelton Airport near Hood Canal. Now in its fifth decade, the two-day event centers on the West Coast Oyster Shucking Championship, with more than 6,000 oysters opened over the weekend alongside wine, microbrews and live music.

Hood Canal's cold, nutrient-rich waters have supported commercial shellfish farming for generations, and Shelton, at the canal's southern end, grew into one of the Pacific Northwest's centers for oyster and clam cultivation.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

OysterFest is built around Hood Canal's genuine shellfish industry rather than a generic seafood theme: Shelton-area farms have cultured oysters and clams for generations, and the festival works directly with those producers

02

The mystery stays covered

Its centerpiece, the West Coast Oyster Shucking Championship, is a serious competitive event judged on both speed and presentation across full-shell and half-shell divisions, giving the festival real sporting stakes beyond eating and drinking

03

The city starts moving

Proceeds benefit local charities through Rotary Club organization, tying the festival's economics to community service

04

The water draws everyone in

Reaching its 45th year running places it among the more established regional food festivals in the Pacific Northwest
