Steamboat Winter Carnival in Steamboat Springs
The Steamboat Winter Carnival is an annual winter sports celebration in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, founded in 1914 by Norwegian ski jumper Carl Howelsen. Centered on Howelsen Hill, the historic ski jump Howelsen built that year, the carnival features street events, ski jumping, and skiing exhibitions celebrating the town's deep competitive skiing heritage.
In 1905, a Norwegian Nordic skier named Karl Hovelsen emigrated to the United States, eventually anglicizing his name to Carl Howelsen and settling in Colorado.
