Watonga Cheese Festival in Watonga
Watonga began its cheese festival in 1976 because the town housed Oklahoma's only cheese factory. Cheese tasting and a cheese-food contest share the weekend with the Noble Street parade, art, quilt and fiber displays and the cheerfully named Great Rat Race. The recurring practices—cheese tasting and recipe competition, Noble Street parade, and Great Rat Race and textile exhibitions—tie the public program to the place and the people who sustain it.
Cheese still leads the parade in Watonga even though the factory that inspired the celebration closed years ago.
