Pierogi Fest in Whiting
A late-July street festival on 119th Street in Whiting, Indiana, celebrating Eastern European heritage through the pierogi since its founding in 1995. Mascot characters, a pierogi eating contest, and a polka parade anchor a weekend organized by the Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce. The festival remains one of the region's most distinctively branded ethnic celebrations.
Whiting, Indiana, a small Lake Michigan city roughly thirty minutes from downtown Chicago, has built its most recognized annual tradition around a single Eastern European dumpling.
