Mule Day fills downtown Winfield, Alabama, on the fourth Saturday of September, when Marion County honors the mules that once powered its rural farms. Started in 1975, the two-day free festival draws 25,000 to 30,000 visitors for mule judging, a parade, a flea market, arts and crafts vendors, a car show, antique tractors, live music, fireworks, and a Civil War reenactment.

Before tractors reached rural Alabama farms in large numbers, mules did the plowing, hauling, and heavy work that kept small farms in counties like Marion running.
