Fiesta de la Torta Frita in Canelones
Now in its 13th documented edition as of 2025 municipal coverage, the Fiesta de la Torta Frita is Canelones city's celebration of torta frita, the fried-dough flatbread known regionally as cachanga, organized directly by the Intendencia de Canelones as a recurring civic food festival open to the whole community.
Torta frita is one of the most everyday, unpretentious foods in Uruguayan and wider Rio de la Plata home cooking: a simple fried flatbread made from wheat dough, often eaten on rainy days as a matter of informal tradition, and known in some regional variants by the name cachanga.
