Fiesta del Queso in Colonia Valdense/Nueva Helvecia
A cheese festival rooted in the Swiss and Waldensian immigrant dairy heritage of Nueva Helvecia and Colonia Valdense, staged as the Fiesta Nacional del Queso, or 2a Fiesta de Quesos del Uruguay, timed to coincide with Uruguay's national heritage weekend, Dia del Patrimonio, in early October.
Nueva Helvecia, whose name literally invokes Switzerland, and neighboring Colonia Valdense, founded by Waldensian Protestant settlers from the Italian Alps, together form one of Uruguay's most concentrated pockets of European dairy-farming heritage, and it is fitting that this cluster of towns has become home to the country's dedicated national cheese festival.
