The story

John Frum Festival in Lamakara/Tanna

John Frum Day is the February 15 observance of the John Frum movement, a millenarian faith centered on a mythic American figure, marked by a distinctive parade in which men of the Tanna Army paint USA on their chests and drill in imitation military dress at Lamakara village, within the Sulphur Bay community on Tanna's east coast.

Every February 15, in a village called Lamakara on the east coast of Tanna, in Vanuatu's Tafea province, a small group of men paint the letters USA across their bare chests, pull on approximations of American military dress, and march in formation carrying rifles carved from wood or bamboo.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's imagery is a direct, performative echo of history: the John Frum movement grew out of Tanna's exposure to the vast American military presence in the Pacific during World War Two, and the Tanna Army, formed in 1957, still marks the day by painting USA across their chests and carrying carved wooden or bamboo replica rifles through a drill-and-dance parade blending kastom performance with military pageantry

02

The mystery stays covered

Lamakara, within Sulphur Bay near an active geothermal field and Mount Yasur volcano, is described in available sources as the last Tanna community fully faithful to the John Frum religion, with adherence reportedly falling from roughly 5,000 believers in the 1990s to under 500 by 2022, making the festival a rare, still-living window into a shrinking movement
