John Frum Festival in Lamakara/Tanna
John Frum Day is the February 15 observance of the John Frum movement, a millenarian faith centered on a mythic American figure, marked by a distinctive parade in which men of the Tanna Army paint USA on their chests and drill in imitation military dress at Lamakara village, within the Sulphur Bay community on Tanna's east coast.
Every February 15, in a village called Lamakara on the east coast of Tanna, in Vanuatu's Tafea province, a small group of men paint the letters USA across their bare chests, pull on approximations of American military dress, and march in formation carrying rifles carved from wood or bamboo.
