International Festival of Comic Strip Algiers in Algiers
An October comics festival in Algiers, launched in 2008 by the Ministry of Culture to rebuild a industry that had stalled during years of civil conflict, now the largest event of its kind in Africa and the Arab world, combining exhibitions, portfolio reviews and panels with visiting international artists and publishers.
A civil war had cut off nearly a decade of Algerian comic-book production before the Ministry of Culture launched a festival in 2008 specifically to rebuild the scene: the Algiers International Comics Festival, known by its French acronym FIBDA, now runs each October as the largest event of its kind in Africa and the Arab world.
