American Samoa Flag Day Celebration in Pago Pago/Fagatogo/Tafuna
American Samoa's largest annual holiday, commemorating the April 17, 1900 Deed of Cession that placed Tutuila under U.S. sovereignty at a flag-raising on Sogelau Hill, Fagatogo. A territory-wide week of parades, dance competitions, canoe races and palm-frond decorated villages, with government offices and businesses closed island-wide on the day itself.
On April 17, 1900, several chiefs of Tutuila signed a Deed of Cession with the United States at a first flag-raising ceremony on Sogelau Hill in Fagatogo, and that single flag-raising is why American Samoa still treats April 17 as its most important date on the calendar.
