The story

CIT - Circuito Internacional de Teatro in Luanda

A months-long touring theatre circuit across Luanda venues bringing together Angolan companies and troupes from Mozambique, Brazil, Portugal, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe. Each edition opens with a tribute to a figure from Angolan theatre history and stages dozens of productions across theatres and cultural centers rather than a single concentrated program, with occasional workshops pairing Angolan writers and visiting directors.

Angolan theatre troupes share stages with visiting companies from Mozambique, Brazil, Portugal, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe during this touring circuit through Luanda's venues, and in some editions the northern province of Huambo as well.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Structured as a circuit rather than a fixed-venue festival, spreading productions across multiple theatres and cultural centers in Luanda (and occasionally Huambo) over one to several months

02

The mystery stays covered

Every edition is anchored by a tribute to a named figure from Angolan theatre history, giving each year's programming a specific thematic identity rather than a generic 'best of' lineup

03

The city starts moving

Growth has been substantial — from a handful of participating groups in the mid-2010s to reportedly around fifty companies drawn from across the Portuguese-speaking world in more recent editions — making it one of the more substantial international theatre exchanges staged on the continent's Atlantic coast

04

The water draws everyone in

Some editions have paired visiting directors with emerging Angolan playwrights for workshops and staged readings, adding a mentorship layer beyond ticketed performances alone
