Festival da Nossa Senhora do Monte in Lubango

A century-old August festival in Lubango, Huíla province, running since 1902, centered on a mass pilgrimage to the hillside church of Nossa Senhora do Monte and expanding into the Expo-Huíla trade fair, sporting events, and the Miss Huíla pageant. Now well past its 120th edition, it stands as one of the most enduring civic and religious traditions anywhere in southern Angola.

Since its first edition in 1902, the city of Lubango in Angola's Huíla province has hosted the Festas da Nossa Senhora do Monte each August, a tradition with roots in 1901, when Portuguese settlers from Madeira Island asked the local priest to help build a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Hill overlooking the city then known as Sá da Bandeira.
