Muxima Pilgrimage in Muxima
The major annual pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Conception of Muxima on the Kwanza River, one of sub-Saharan Africa's most significant Marian sites since 1833. Traditionally peaking the first weekend of September, it has drawn close to a million pilgrims in its largest years and hosted a historic visit from Pope Leo XIV.
Fishermen and the faithful have made their way to the banks of the Kwanza River since at least 1833, when the pilgrimage to what is now the Shrine of Our Lady of the Conception of Muxima first took hold, and the sanctuary has stood as a recognized national monument since 1924.
