Antigua Carnival in St. John's
Antigua Carnival began in 1957 as a replacement for the Old Time Christmas Festival, launching with a parade, a Carnival Queen pageant crowning Miss Gloria White, and a Calypso competition at the Deluxe Cinema; nearly seven decades later it runs across roughly ten days from late July into early August, anchored by Carnival City at the Antigua Recreation Ground and the early-morning J'ouvert street celebration.
Antigua Carnival traces its origins to 1957, when it was created to replace the earlier Old Time Christmas Festival, with organisers hoping the new summer celebration would help inspire tourism to Antigua and Barbuda.
