Tango BA Festival and World Cup in Buenos Aires
The city's annual tango celebration, built around the World Tango Dance Championship, where couples from dozens of countries compete in two very different disciplines: traditional social-floor tango and a theatrical, choreographed stage style. Run by the Buenos Aires city government, the surrounding festival adds weeks of free public milongas, concerts, and beginner dance classes open to anyone in the city.
Couples who spend the year training in Buenos Aires salons compete in two categories that could hardly be more different: Tango de Pista, which judges dancers on strict adherence to traditional milonga floorcraft and social-dance etiquette, and Tango Escenario, a choreographed, more theatrical style that borrows freely from ballet and contemporary dance.
