The story

Mar del Plata International Film Festival in Mar del Plata

Argentina's flagship film festival, the only FIAPF-accredited competitive feature festival in Latin America and the oldest of its class anywhere in the Americas. Run by the national film institute INCAA in the seaside city of Mar del Plata, it screens work across several parallel competition sections, from international and Latin American cinema to a dedicated, more experimental Argentine strand.

Mar del Plata's festival began in 1954 as a non-competitive showcase under Juan Domingo Perón's government, became a competitive event in 1959 once the Argentine Film Critics Association took over its running, and then went dark for roughly a quarter-century before its 1996 relaunch reestablished it as a fixture on the international festival calendar.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

It holds a category no other Latin American festival has: FIAPF accreditation for a competitive feature section, making it the region's sole entry in that top tier and the oldest festival of its kind anywhere in the Americas

02

The mystery stays covered

Its official selection splits into four distinct competitions — international, Latin American, Argentine, and the more experimental Altered States — rather than a single headline award, and it runs in a seaside resort city rather than the capital
