National Winter Festival Ushuaia in Ushuaia

Ushuaia's season-opening winter festival, created in 2000 around the first anniversary of the Cerro Castor ski center and granted national status in 2023. Its centerpiece is a night torch descent by around eighty skiers down the Halcón Pelegrino slope, ending with the lighting of a brazier.

Ushuaia's winter festival grew out of a ski resort's first birthday: the Instituto Fueguino de Turismo created the event in 2000 to mark one year of operation at Cerro Castor, the ski center that anchors the city's winter tourism industry, and built it into an annual season-opening celebration from there.
