Aruba Torch Parade in Oranjestad
Aruba's Torch Parade, or Fakkeloptocht, is the nighttime procession that officially opens Carnival season in Oranjestad, tracing back to 1967 when the Tivoli Club staged the first version with a steel band and torches from the local marine barracks. Thousands of marchers and spectators fill the streets after dark.
A procession of torch-bearing marchers has opened Aruba's Carnival season since 1967, when the Tivoli Club, one of the island's oldest social clubs, organized the first Fakkeloptocht through the streets of Oranjestad.
