The story

Brisbane Festival in Brisbane

Brisbane's biggest annual arts event runs three to four weeks each September across South Bank, the CBD and riverside precincts, staging theatre, circus, dance and live music before climaxing in Riverfire — a single night of military flypasts and synchronised fireworks over the Brisbane River watched by more than half a million people from the banks and bridges.

Brisbane's tradition of a large civic arts celebration traces to the Warana Festival, launched in 1961 under the banner of entertainment for the people, by the people.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Riverfire is the standout: a free, single-night spectacle combining a Royal Australian Air Force flypast with fireworks launched simultaneously from several CBD bridges and buildings, choreographed as one continuous show over the river rather than a single static barge display

02

The mystery stays covered

That scale and total absence of a ticket price make it one of the most democratic major events in Australia — anywhere along kilometres of riverbank counts as a viewing spot

03

The city starts moving

The festival around it leans heavily into outdoor and site-specific work rather than conventional theatre seasons, using South Bank's lagoons, parklands and river as active elements of the productions rather than backdrops
