Darwin Festival in Darwin

Darwin Festival runs 18 balmy dry-season nights each August, growing from the 1979 post-cyclone Bougainvillea Festival into the Northern Territory's largest arts event. Festival Park and the open-air Darwin Amphitheatre in the Botanic Gardens anchor a program of outdoor concerts, theatre, comedy, cabaret, film and visual art, drawing close to 200,000 visits across the run.

Darwin's festival tradition began in 1979 as the Bougainvillea Festival, a floral celebration proposed by Northern Territory health director Dr Charles Gurd to help draw the community together as the city rebuilt after Cyclone Tracy devastated it in 1974.
