The story

Northern Territory Writers Festival in Darwin

The Northern Territory Writers Festival brings authors, poets and storytellers to Garramilla/Darwin and Mparntwe/Alice Springs in alternating years, mixing panel discussions, book launches and workshops with the distinctive outdoor settings of the Top End and Central Australia. Founded in 1999 by the NT Writers' Centre, it has hosted major Australian names alongside First Nations writers and emerging Territory talent in an intimate, community-driven format.

Every second year the Northern Territory Writers Festival hands the reins to the desert instead of the coast, alternating its home between Garramilla/Darwin and Mparntwe/Alice Springs so that neither city holds a monopoly on the Territory's literary life.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike festivals confined to a single capital, this one physically relocates between Darwin and Alice Springs, so the desert light of Central Australia and the tropical humidity of the Top End each shape a different edition

02

The mystery stays covered

Sessions are often staged outdoors or inside museums and galleries rather than convention centres, giving the program a distinctly regional character

03

The city starts moving

First Nations storytelling holds a genuinely prominent place rather than a token slot, reflecting the Territory's deep concentration of Aboriginal language and oral history traditions

04

The water draws everyone in

The smaller scale keeps it intimate: authors mix with the audience rather than disappearing after their session
