The story

Lismore Lantern Parade in Lismore

Lismore Lantern Parade is a free, after-dark procession through central Lismore each June, timed close to the winter solstice and now in its fourth decade. Hundreds of handmade lanterns, built in community workshops beforehand, move through the streets accompanied by drumming, with reserved grandstand seating available at Oakes Oval for a fixed viewing spot.

Lismore's Lantern Parade has run for more than three decades, growing from a grassroots community project into one of the Northern Rivers' best-known winter events, timed each June to sit close to the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The parade's strength is that it is almost entirely handmade and volunteer-run: residents, school groups and families build their own lanterns in workshops in the weeks before the event, rather than a professional producer supplying the spectacle

02

The mystery stays covered

Running for more than 30 years, it has become a fixture of Lismore's identity as a Northern Rivers arts and counterculture hub, and after the town's repeated major flooding, the parade has taken on added meaning as a free, shared, after-dark gathering built on collective creativity and resilience rather than commercial spectacle

03

The city starts moving

Grandstand seating at Oakes Oval gives an optional, comfortable alternative to street-side viewing
