Midsumma Festival in Melbourne
Melbourne's LGBTQIA+ arts and culture festival runs 22 days across January and February, growing from 1988 community organising by the city's lesbian community. It opens with the 100,000-strong Midsumma Carnival at Alexandra Gardens and closes with the Pride March along St Kilda's Fitzroy Street, bookending around 200 events in theatre, visual art, cabaret, comedy and community programming.
Midsumma Festival grew out of organising work begun in 1988 by members of Melbourne's lesbian community, who staged Australia's first Lesbian Festival as a direct response to rising discrimination facing the city's queer community and as a homegrown counterpart to Sydney's already-established Mardi Gras.
