The story

RISING Melbourne in Melbourne

Launched in June 2022 after a pandemic-delayed debut, RISING replaced both the Melbourne International Arts Festival and White Night Melbourne as the city's flagship winter arts event. Conceived by Gideon Obarzanek and Hannah Fox, it runs roughly ten to twelve days each June, programming theatre, live music, visual art and after-dark installations across Melbourne's CBD, laneways and riverside precincts.

RISING was announced on 21 May 2020 as a deliberate reinvention of Melbourne's major arts calendar, created to replace two very different existing events: the long-running, multi-week Melbourne International Arts Festival, known for conventional theatre, dance and music seasons, and White Night Melbourne, a single-night, free, dusk-till-dawn celebration of art and light installations across the CBD that had run since 2013.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

RISING deliberately treats Melbourne's cold, dark June nights as a creative opportunity rather than a limitation, staging much of its program after sunset in laneways, disused buildings and along the Yarra River to create an atmosphere unlike any other Australian festival

02

The mystery stays covered

Its origin as a merger of two very different predecessor events — a traditional multi-week arts season and a single-night mass free event — gives it an unusual creative range, spanning intimate ticketed theatre through to large-scale free public installations

03

The city starts moving

Backed directly by Victorian Government funding through Creative Victoria, it functions as the state's primary vehicle for major new commissioned Australian work, regularly premiering ambitious site-specific pieces that could not exist within a conventional theatre season
