The story

Royal Melbourne Show in Melbourne

Royal Melbourne Show has run at the Melbourne Showgrounds in Ascot Vale every September since the 1880s, tracing its roots back to 1848 as a small agricultural society's ploughing competition. The Royal title was granted by Queen Victoria in 1890, and the modern show combines livestock competitions, woodchopping and produce judging with a large carnival precinct, drawing attendances of up to half a million people.

Royal Melbourne Show traces its origins back to 1848, when the Port Phillip Farmers' Society began running competitive ploughing matches that gradually expanded to include livestock judging, grain demonstrations and commercial displays.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few Australian events span quite the same range in a single afternoon: polished cattle and sheep judging rings sit a short walk from carnival rides, sideshow games and showbags, letting visitors move between serious agricultural competition and funfair spectacle within minutes

02

The mystery stays covered

Tracing its origins to a small ploughing contest in 1848, the show earned its royal title from Queen Victoria in 1890 in recognition of its contribution to Victorian agriculture

03

The city starts moving

Its permanent home at the Melbourne Showgrounds, established alongside Flemington Racecourse in the 1880s, gives the event a settled, purpose-built setting unlike a pop-up festival ground
