Sculpture by the Sea Bondi in Sydney/Bondi
Founded by David Handley after a 1995 visit to a Czech sculpture park, Sculpture by the Sea has transformed the Bondi-to-Tamarama coastal walk into a free open-air gallery every October and November since 1997. More than 100 artists exhibit large-scale and site-specific works along the clifftop track, drawing enormous crowds and having since inspired sister exhibitions in Perth and Denmark.
Sculpture by the Sea began with a chance visit: in 1995, Sydney arts organiser David Handley, then living in Prague, toured an outdoor sculpture park in Klatovy in northern Bohemia and returned to Australia determined to create something similar.
