The story

Sydney Film Festival in Sydney

Established in 1954 by university and community film societies, Sydney Film Festival is one of the oldest festivals of its kind in the Asia-Pacific. Anchored at the ornate 1929 State Theatre since 1974, it now screens roughly 150 features each June to more than 130,000 attendees, and has awarded the competitive Sydney Film Prize to its most daring official-selection film since 2008.

Sydney Film Festival was established on 11 June 1954 by the Sydney University Film Group in collaboration with the Sydney Film Society and the Federation of New South Wales Film Societies, under the chairmanship of academic A.K.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's grassroots founding by film societies rather than a government or commercial body gives it genuine cinephile credibility dating back seven decades

02

The mystery stays covered

The State Theatre venue is a significant part of the experience in its own right: a heritage 1929 movie palace with gothic-revival interiors and a vast crystal chandelier, offering a screening experience that recreates the grandeur of cinema's golden age

03

The city starts moving

The Sydney Film Prize, introduced in 2008 with a substantial cash award for the boldest film in competition, has become an internationally watched prize that filmmakers actively seek to enter, adding competitive prestige to a festival that spent its first half-century as purely non-competitive
