Born from a 1978 protest march that ended in violent police arrests on Oxford Street, Sydney's Mardi Gras has grown into one of the world's largest LGBTQIA+ celebrations. The multi-week festival each February and March culminates in a parade drawing more than 200,000 participants and spectators down Oxford Street, alongside the earlier community festival Fair Day and an official after-party.

On 24 June 1978, a small group calling itself the Gay Solidarity Group staged a day of political events in Sydney demanding an end to employment and housing discrimination and police harassment, and to anti-homosexual laws still on the books.
