The story

Sydney Writers' Festival in Sydney

Since its 1997 origins at the State Library of New South Wales, the Sydney Writers' Festival has grown into one of the world's largest literary festivals, presenting over 300 events with more than 400 writers each May. Now based at the converted railway workshop precinct of Carriageworks after two decades at Walsh Bay, it also runs programming across Parramatta, Bankstown and other suburban and regional venues.

The Sydney Writers' Festival held its first program in January 1997, with early events concentrated at the State Library of New South Wales before the festival established itself as a fully independent event running from 12 to 17 May 1998, featuring 169 participants across venues in and around central Sydney.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few literary festivals combine a heritage industrial venue like Carriageworks, with its soaring brick sheds and railway-era architecture, with a genuinely wide geographic spread into Sydney's western and regional suburbs rather than confining itself to the inner city

02

The mystery stays covered

The scale — more than 400 participants across 300-plus events in a single May week — puts it among the largest literary festivals globally, comparable to Edinburgh's book festival

03

The city starts moving

Panels regularly bring major international authors into direct conversation with Australian writers and public commentators, giving audiences access to global literary figures without needing to travel abroad
