Diagonale Graz in Graz
Diagonale is Austria's national festival of Austrian film, held each March in Graz across a cluster of city cinemas and anchored by the Kunsthaus Graz. Originally launched in Salzburg in 1993, it relocated permanently to Graz in 1998 and now awards the country's most highly endowed film prizes.
Diagonale's first three editions ran not in Graz but in Salzburg, organized by the Austrian Film Commission each December from 1993 in loose partnership with the Salzburg Festival, under artistic direction that passed from filmmaker Peter Tscherkassky in its opening years to Heinrich Mis, then head of the ORF program Kunst-Stucke, by 1995.
