The story

Digithalia Graz in Graz

A festival of digital and virtual theater forms inside the historic Schauspielhaus Graz, mixing performance, games, film, and installations to explore how community, power, and identity take shape in virtual space, curated by the duo F. Wiesel since its 2024 launch, now established as one of Austria's few festivals dedicated entirely to digital stagecraft.

Inside the Schauspielhaus Graz, a proper theater with raked seating and heavy curtains, four days each spring bring something the building wasn't built for: screens bleeding into the proscenium, performers existing partly in the room and partly in a projected elsewhere.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets Digithalia apart is the collision between an old-fashioned proscenium theater and genuinely experimental digital staging: performers work partly in physical space and partly through projection and virtual layering, so the audience is often unsure where the stage ends and the digital world begins

02

The mystery stays covered

Wiesel (Hanke Wilsmann and Jost von Harleßem), the festival treats digital tools critically rather than as spectacle, using them to sharpen theater's oldest questions about power, community, and resistance

03

The city starts moving

Its youth is itself part of the appeal — as a still-new festival, the programming feels exploratory, gathering regional and international work that hasn't yet settled into a predictable format
