The story

Sterrrn Festival Graz in Graz

Sterrrn is a queer-feminist, multidisciplinary festival in Graz organized by the Grrrls Kulturverein, launched in 2022 as an expansion of the long-running Grrrls Night Out series and named for the German gender star. Held each June, it alternates between a multi-day format at the Austrian Sculpture Park and a concentrated one-day city-center event with a pre-party, combining music, workshops, performative art, and discussion panels.

Sterrrn grew directly out of Grrrls Night Out, a long-running Graz event series organized by the Grrrls Kulturverein, a cultural association founded in 2009 to support FINTA* artists, meaning women, intersex, non-binary, trans, and agender musicians, instrumentalists, and DJs, in a Graz cultural scene the organizers describe as still male-dominated.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Sterrrn's name comes directly from the Gender-Sternchen, the asterisk-based punctuation German speakers use for gender-inclusive language, rendered here as a triple-r spelling that gives the festival a distinctive visual identity tied explicitly to its cultural-political mission

02

The mystery stays covered

That mission, creating visibility for FINTA* and queer artists and confronting structural inequality in a cultural sector the organizers describe as still male-dominated, shapes programming choices as much as genre does, with workshops, lectures, and discussion rounds carrying equal billing alongside music performances

03

The city starts moving

Its alternating format, between a sprawling multi-day event at the Austrian Sculpture Park and a compact one-day city-center festival with a pre-party, is unusual among Austrian festivals, which typically settle on one fixed scale and location
