The story

Ars Electronica Festival in Linz

Ars Electronica is Linz's September festival of media art, science and technology, spreading exhibitions, robotics demonstrations and sound installations through venues across the city. Anchored by the permanent Ars Electronica Center on the Danube, it doubles as the venue for the Prix Ars Electronica media-art award and draws researchers alongside artists.

Ars Electronica began in 1979 with a simple premise: treat art, science and technology as one conversation instead of three separate disciplines, and hold it in public.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's venues change by edition, but its signature move is repurposing industrial or institutional spaces never built for art -- a former postal sorting depot's loading docks, university lecture halls, museum galleries -- rather than confining work to white-cube settings

02

The mystery stays covered

It also runs the Prix Ars Electronica, among the oldest media-art prizes worldwide, so exhibits often double as first public showings of shortlisted work in robotics, AI and interactive design
